Synopsis

Zandvoort provided a brutal backdrop for the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix, a race defined by sudden technical heartbreaks within the top teams. From Verstappen’s catastrophic opening-lap exit to a dramatic Red Flag period, the narrative shifted from a damp-track survival test to a tactical duel. As Norris secured back-to-back victories for McLaren, the internal tension at Mercedes and Ferrari reached a boiling point, proving that the fiercest rival is often sitting in the same garage.

A Chaotic Opening In Zandvoort

The Dutch Grand Prix begins with a formation lap. Norris at P1 heads down first, with the rest following suit. Soon, everyone gets back on the grid at their positions; the track was half dry and half wet, especially in the final corner.

As the lights go out in Zandvoort, racing begins. Norris goes away first. Antonelli gets through Russell; Leclerc gets past Hamilton and Piastri. Verstappen was squeezed into the grass off the line by Hamilton and banged wheels, which caused Hamilton to lose momentum and drop a position to Piastri. And soon Verstappen again banged wheels with Lawson at Turn 3.

The Zandvoort Trap: Verstappen’s Early Exit

Lap 2: a big crash at the back by Verstappen, who was coming round the final damp corner, misjudged a drying patch on the track and accelerated to get back on power through that final corner, which resulted in his car snapping sideways and sending him slamming heavily into the outside barriers. As a result, the car lost its rear, causing a lot of debris to be out on the track.

Red Flags are out on Lap 3; Verstappen's car is being cleared away. At the time of the crash, Lawson and Gasly, behind Verstappen, were quick enough to avoid crashing into him while avoiding the debris from his car.

Further back, Bortoleto had a full 360 spin in the midst of the incident after losing traction at the final damp corner, making the track slippery. Still, he gained control of his car and continued while avoiding the debris, dropping from P14 to P18.

Hülkenberg, behind his teammate, narrowly avoided a heavy collision by swerving past the spinning car; otherwise, it would have been a T-Bone crash with Bortoleto. The red flag ended after approximately 30 minutes; all the drivers went out of the pit lane to get back on the grid for the race to start again.

The Second Start in Zandvoort

But more drama at the back as Bearman went off the track and stopped, reporting a sudden loss of power, causing an extra formation lap while stewards took Bearman’s car away. Drivers got back on the grid, and lights out again in Zandvoort. Norris gets away and tries to cut off Antonelli, but him being on the inside line gains speed, and Norris goes wide, making Antonelli the new race leader.

Piastri gets past Russell in 3rd, with the top 5 currently Antonelli, Norris, Piastri, Russell, Leclerc. On lap 8, Antonelli is leading but cannot create a gap with Norris behind him in overtake mode. Colapinto and Lindblad behind have received a drive-through penalty.

Piastri begins to drop away from the two drivers ahead to give Norris an advantage. Antonelli eventually starts to pull away from Norris, and Leclerc is behind Russell with just a fourth-of-a-second gap, while Russell is struggling with rear grip.

Lap 15: Russell is 2.3 seconds behind Piastri, but instead of challenging him, he is dropping back into the clutches of Leclerc. On Lap 17, Norris is asked about his pace and reports that his pace is zero, which Antonelli would like to hear right now.

Pit Stop Drama and Midfield Overtaking Battles

Lap 18: Russell pits for hard tyres and goes in P8 ahead of Tsunoda. Piastri pits on the next lap, hoping to get ahead of Russell, but due to a slow stop, ends up behind Russell.

Lap 22: Norris, Antonelli and Leclerc pit, but slow stops for the three drivers, making the top five: Hamilton, Antonelli, Norris, Russell, Piastri. Hamilton starts losing time to Antonelli, who was 7 seconds behind but is now just 4 seconds behind. Soon Hamilton pits on Lap 26 and comes out behind his teammate, making Antonelli again the race leader.

Further back, Gasly and Lindblad are fighting hard; Hulkenberg gets involved as Gasly lock up and lose 2 places. These 3 showing that overtaking is indeed possible on this track.

Backmarker Bottleneck: Leaders Lose Time at The Front

Back up front on Lap 30, Norris starts to close in on Antonelli, and both begin to experience traffic from the backmarkers. While Russell is 6 seconds behind them by passes Piastri, who now has Leclerc for company.

On Lap 32, Leclerc goes to pull a move on Piastri, but having done his homework on how to defend, as he knows where Leclerc pulled a move in the sprint, he covers the inside line, but soon Leclerc gets past him 2 laps later.

Leclerc lands in P4, and Hamilton, seeing an opportunity, is all over the back of Piastri’s car. Same corner, different lap, Hamilton pulls the same move as his teammate and manages to get past Piastri, who was defenceless and will want to recharge now.

On Lap 36, Antonelli and Norris are still losing time because of the backmarkers. Russell is 7.4 seconds behind in P3 and has his wing mirror full of the two red Ferraris.

On Lap 40, Norris is within a second of Antonelli; overtake mode is his, but he has not had an opportunity because of traffic. Antonelli pits a lap later along with Russell, P4 for Antonelli and P6 for Russell.

Communication Breakdowns at Zandvoort

There seemed to be tension within the Ferrari duo, as Leclerc, who was called in on Lap 43, stayed out and did not want to let his clearly faster teammate through. Eventually, Leclerc boxes and goes behind Russell in P6.

On Lap 46, Antonelli radios that he has no grip, having hard tyres on, which are just 4 laps old and should be up to temperature. The track is 35 degrees, so grip should not be a problem. Hamilton is 2.1 seconds ahead of Antonelli and is soon the race leader as Norris pits and gets behind Antonelli in P3.

On Lap 52, Antonelli is again having issues with his tyres, the rear ones this time, with Piastri 0.4 seconds behind him. Lap 54, Norris nearly collides with Hamilton as he cuts between the two cars to get past Antonelli and Hamilton.

Strategic Friction: Hamilton’s 'Guinea Pig' Radio and the Mercedes Teammate Duel

Hamilton is not happy being kept out on the track as Antonelli passes him too. He then radios his team and says, “Are you using me as guinea pig?” and is soon after called into the pits and comes out behind Antonelli in P4.

On Lap 57, VSC is deployed as Ocon stopped on the track due to mechanical issues. Antonelli pits during the VSC and comes out behind Russell in P3, while Norris is unable to get a cheap pit stop and stays out as the VSC ends.

After the VSC, Antonelli is chasing Russell with the Ferrari duo behind him. Russell radios and asks his team to think as a team and to get Antonelli out of the fight with him. Lap 60, Stroll retires from the race, joining the two Haas cars and Verstappen.

Lap 63, and a tough decision for Russell as to whether to fight Antonelli and lose time or let your championship rival go to keep the Ferraris at bay. Soon after, two laps in, Russell is asked to swap positions with Antonelli as he is faster and has the same pace as Norris.

Russell lets Antonelli pass him, who has a gap of 11.5 seconds behind Norris. Russell says to his team that we lost a double podium here, and he might not be wrong, as Hamilton is already behind him. On lap 69, Antonelli, who seemed to have a faster pace, is unable to close the gap to Norris and has reported an aero-degradation in his car.

The Late VSC Scramble

Lap 70: VSC is deployed as the two Williams cars make contact, which might save Russell, as Hamilton was hunting him down, but the VSC not being in his favour ended soon, with just 2 laps to go.

Soon, on the final lap, Norris heads for the win and crosses the line, getting back-to-back wins for McLaren. Antonelli takes 2nd; Russell holds on, securing P3 and also moving to 2nd in the drivers' championship.
