IIT Delhi students' Protest: Demands, Reasons and Latest Updates

Protesters Demanded Impartial Probe

IITians began their Day 4 of protest on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, with the same enthusiasm and sought alumni support. An IIT Delhi student, Priyank Rajput, along with fellow protesters, demanded an impartial investigation into the death of a 31-year-old student on August 22. “We wanted an impartial investigation into the reasons behind his suicide. Rishikesh was an active personality involved in student activities.”

IIT Delhi Students Demand Accountability

On Monday, August 24, 2026, at 9 a.m. IIT Delhi Students gathered near the Lecture Hall complex. Later moved to the first-floor lobby, right outside the director’s office, demanding the Dean’s resignation.

Students who normally spend eighteen hours a day buried in research papers and stand shoulder-to-shoulder beneath the concrete pillars of the main building. The mobilisation was striking and unusual to see.

Why Are IITians Protesting?

The demonstration came two days after a 31-year-old MSc Physics Student, Rishikesh Kumar, died allegedly by committing suicide after jumping from the sixth floor of a building on the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campus, on August 22, 2026. Students were triggered by what they described as a pattern of administrative indifference after eight student suicides at the institute since 2023.

What Are IITians Demanding?

IITians staged a sit-in protest. Classes were suspended for the day, and students submitted a list of demands to the administration. Demanding accountability and reforms to student welfare systems.

1. Resignation of a Dean and Associate Dean of Student Welfare, Associate Dean (Hostel Management) and Head of the Physics Department.

2. Independent inquiry into the deaths.

3. ₹1 crore compensation for Rishikesh Kumar’s family.

The management responded by constituting a five-member External Inquiry Committee. The panel includes a former police chief, a psychiatry professor, two student representatives, and the institute’s Registrar. Moreover, the committee was asked to submit its report within two weeks.

On-Ground Protest

Protesters claimed issues such as denial of hostel accommodation, lack of academic project allocation, and insufficient mental health support.

An audio message from Kumar’s mother, played during the protest, described repeated unsuccessful attempts to secure on-campus housing for her son, who had been under financial and emotional strain following his father’s death.

The Story So Far

As per the preliminary inquiry, the student had entered the IIT Delhi campus through the main gate around 8 a.m. and immediately went to the Lecture Hall Complex, where he took a lift to the sixth floor. He allegedly jumped from the front side of the building. He was rushed to the institute's campus hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

A Police Control Room (PCR) call regarding the incident was received around 8.30 a.m. at Kishangarh police station. A crime team and a forensic science laboratory unit were also called to collect evidence.

Police claimed they haven’t recovered any suicide note; however, circumstances surrounding Kumar’s death are being investigated.
