Trade War Between U.S. and Canada Escalates

Trump on the Failed Negotiation

Early Sunday, 23 August 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump revived his “51st state” rhetoric as he made his first comment about the failed trade negotiations between Canada and the U.S which triggered new 50% U.S. tariffs on a variety of Canadian goods. Trump also stated that for years, American farmers have been charged “massive amounts of Tariffs”

Donald Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social, “Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!!” He further went on to add, “They have charged our great farmers, for many years, massive amounts of Tariffs. No more!!! President DJT.”

The Canadian Viewpoint

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called the recent tariffs a "miscalculation" which has been constructed to "hurt and divide us".

Carney said that he would match Trump's tariffs "dollar-for-dollar" from September 8, 2026, including charges on steel, dairy, appliances and electronics. He said that the US and Canada are now declared to be in a trade "war”.

On Saturday, August 22, 2026, Carney said, "They asked too much, and they offered too little." He further added, "You're at war when you get attacked. We got attacked."

The details and knowledge of what was actually offered or asked for at the 11th hour by either side have been limited, but on Saturday, August 22, 2026, Carney outlined three issues he said ruined the negotiations.

The prime minister said while there had been progress on an approach to auto tariffs, medium and heavy vehicles like trucks were not included.

Carney said the U.S. was only willing to agree to a trade deal on cars and would not extend it to larger vehicles, which would adversely impact plants like Ford Motor in Oakville.

The U.S. could potentially cut steel and aluminium tariffs from 50 to 25 per cent and auto duties from 25 to 15 per cent, with softwood lumber also possibly being discussed.

Carney’s decision to walk away from the negotiation also centred around the U.S. wanting to include terms that would put limits on trade deals Canada could seek with other countries.

The Implications

The conditions may have wrecked recent deals with Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates, as well as talks that were taking place with India. Carney’s office has pointed out that his leadership group has made 20 deals since the Liberal Party formed a government in the spring of 2025.

On Saturday, August 22, 2026, Carney said, “We believe in free trade; we’re the partner of choice in many respects for countries around the world, and the Americans wanted to restrict that. They had language that they wanted to restrict. Unacceptable.”

Although he did not elaborate much on the matter, there were also issues regarding the French language rules which added to the disagreements between the two parties. Carney said in French there were “threats” from the U.S. in the deal over French language and Quebec culture.
