This comes after he suggested renaming Lake Ontario as "Lake America"

U.S. President Donald Trump’s name-changing spree continues as he shared a video on his social media platform suggesting that New Mexico should be renamed as ‘New America’.
Trump did not provide an explanation for the post on his Truth Social platform, leaving it vague as to whether the video was rhetorical or reflected any plans by his administration to rename the state.
The post follows Trump’s previous efforts to rename geographical landmarks, the first one being on January 20, 2025, when he signed an executive order directing the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, a move opposed by Mexico.
Then a more recent one took place a while ago on August 27, 2026, when he signed another order renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America” amidst the already escalating trade tensions with Canada.
New Mexico became a US territory back in the mid-19th century following the Mexican-American War. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 formally surrendered the region, along with California, to the United States.
