Why the Operation?

On Monday, August 24, 2026, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced ‘Operation Economic Outcast’, which includes new sanctions targeting Iran’s financial safety nets, as well as warnings to its trade partners about potential penalties.

Describing it as an unparalleled push to cut off Tehran’s finances, Bessent also noted that the strategy increases the risk of secondary sanctions, raising penalties for any nation, company, or group that maintains business relations with Tehran.

Four Companies Facing the U.S. Sanctions

The four “India-based companies” that are facing sanctions are a customs broker, Portease Partners LLP, and its partners, Indrismiya Ashrafmiya Sheikh and Harish Ramachandra Rangi.

On Monday, August 24, 2026, the State Department said that the companies facing the sanctions have played a huge role in helping the import of multiple shipments of Iranian petrochemical products to India.

The State Department said, “PORTEASE is being designated pursuant to section 3(a)(iii) of E.O. 13846 for, on or after November 5, 2018, knowingly engaging in a significant transaction for the purchase, acquisition, sale, transport, or marketing of petrochemical products from Iran.”

The other Indian firms that are facing U.S. action include Sadashiva Overseas Limited; PP Softtech Private Limited, along with its director Prashant Garg; and Prakrutees Infra Impex Private Limited. Sheikh, Rangi and Garg are Indian nationals, the release stated.

Why Were the Companies Listed?

The release by the State Department also states that Sadashiva Overseas had imported Iranian-origin petroleum products that are worth around $119 million, leading to action under its Iran sanctions campaign.

The companies were listed as “knowingly engaging in a significant transaction for the purchase, acquisition, sale, transport, or marketing of petroleum or petroleum products from Iran.”

Imposing the Sanction

On Monday, August 24, 2026, State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott, in one of his statements, said, “Today, the United States took sweeping action against multiple entities, individuals, and vessels enabling the Iranian regime’s destabilising activities.”

He further added, “Such activities include attacks against US forces and allies in the region, illicit weapons procurement, cyber intrusions into American infrastructure, and the movement of energy products whose sale funds terrorism globally.”
