What is Reservation Hatao Andolan?

Thousands of Protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, on August 21, 2026, under a single banner, ‘Reservation Hatao Andolan’ (RHA), an Instagram page that led mass mobilisation of frustration against India’s reservation system. “Every policy evolves with time. It’s time Reservation did too.”

Reservation Hatao Andolan (RHA) has rapidly expanded across social media and has already gained 5.6 million followers on Instagram; the @reservationhataomovement has over 400 posts, follows only the Indian Army's official account and describes itself as a citizen-backed movement. Protesters have called for re-evaluation of reservation policies in light of current social and economic conditions.

What are the demands of Protesters?

1. INCOME-BASED RESERVATION: Poverty has no caste. Reservation should be based on income, not caste, so every poor family gets equal opportunity.

2. ONE FAMILY. ONE RESERVATION. ONE TIME: Once a family has benefited from the reservation, the next generation should compete on merit.

3. MINIMUM STANDARDS FOR EVERYONE: Every Exam must have minimum qualifying marks within 10-20% of the higher quota cut-off. If reserved seats remain vacant, they should be allotted to General Category candidates.

4. STOP RESERVATION POLITICS: • Ban political parties from promising new or higher reservation quotas during elections. • The 50% limit on caste-based Reservation should not be breached. • Review Reservation every 10 years using updated socio-economic data. • Update Reservation lists periodically. Communities that have progressed should be moved to the General category.

50 Detained amid Anti-Reservation Protest

Around 50 people demonstrating against the caste-based reservation policy were detained at Jantar Mantar, a protest site in New Delhi, on Friday, August 21, 2026. Some protesters alleged that internet jammers had been deployed around the site, making it difficult to access social media from the area.

Why were Anti-Reservation Protesters Detained?

Delhi Police said permission had been granted for a protest at Ramlila Ground in Central Delhi near Turkman Gate and New Delhi Railway Station, and not at Jantar Mantar. The allotted venue permitted a gathering of 500 people to maintain strict crowd control.

However, the protesters refused to leave Jantar Mantar and had a standoff with the security personnel guarding the Jantar Mantar protest site.

Why did Jantar Mantar become the hot spot once again?

The Reservation Hatao Andolan gained national attention because it transformed from a digital social media campaign into a mass mobilisation. Thousands of protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, to demand reforms to India’s reservation system. The Demonstrators gathered under a banner, “Reservation Hatao Andolan."

The protesters had gathered at Jantar Mantar despite the police's repeated reminder that no permission had been granted to stage a demonstration there; an NOC was issued for Ramlila Ground instead.

The turnout underscored the intensity of sentiment among protesters regarding India's reservation system.

Criticism of the Movement

The Reservation Hatao Andolan has gained significant support online and offline. However, it has also drawn criticism from social justice advocates, academics, and activists. Critics argue that reservation was introduced not as an anti-poverty measure but as a tool to address centuries of caste-based discrimination, exclusion, and unequal access to education and employment. However, what should have been a debate on the creamy layer has turned into a vote bank issue.

Critics argue that caste-based discrimination affects access to opportunities and representation, even among economically stable members of Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

Opponents, further argue that replacing caste-based reservation entirely with income-based criteria could weaken constitutional measures designed to ensure representation for disadvantaged and backward communities.

Moreover, India’s reservation system is ingrained in the Indian Constitution. The Supreme Court has upheld a 50% ceiling on reservations. However, certain states have enacted reservation policies exceeding this limit, leading to continued legal and constitutional discussions.

Rethinking India’s Reservation Framework

The Reservation Hatao Andolan is the largest anti-reservation mobilisation in recent years. The debate has reignited questions about the future of India's reservation framework and whether it should be revised to align with changing social and economic realities.
