From Kyrgyzstan and Egypt to a likely BRICS stop in Delhi and a Washington summit with Trump, Xi Jinping is undertaking his most extensive travel since the pandemic

Kyrgyzstan and the SCO
From August 30 to September 3, 2026, Xi Jinping visited Kyrgyzstan and Egypt, respectively, on invitation of the Presidents of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Japarov and Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and also participated in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek. T
his meeting in Bishkek had a special symbolic significance as it was the 25th founding anniversary of the SCO. Arriving back to Beijing on the morning of September 3 with his wife Peng Liyuan, Xi successfully completed his participation in the SCO Summit 2026 and the related state visits.
Egypt: A Decade in the Making
The trip to Egypt was significant in and of itself. The visit was the first visit to Egypt in 10 years by Xi, who has been pushing China's economic interests in the Suez Canal region by establishing a bilateral trade and economic cooperation zone with Egypt.
The Delhi Question
It's widely expected that Xi will follow this trip to New Delhi this time to attend the BRICS summit, though it has not been confirmed by the Chinese capital as yet. Xi is likely to participate in the BRICS summit in New Delhi on September 12–13, which would be his first visit to India since 2020, when he was scheduled to attend the summit but he did not travel due to the deadly border clashes between the two countries.
Reading the Strategic Signal
The travel frenzy is seen as a measured response to China's recent attitude. But one of the best ways to gauge Xi's priorities is whether he has been traveling abroad, and if so, how much, because his foreign travel was “sharply curtailed” in recent years, said one managing director at consultancy Teneo, who spoke with CNBC.
Xi's only trip abroad this year this year was to North Korea in June for his first visit in seven years. But there had been a parallel change at home, with more than 20 foreign leaders from around the globe, including US President Donald Trump, visiting Beijing in the first half of this year, the Center for Strategic and International Studies reported.
The Washington Endgame
The final destination of the tour is likely to be the USA. Following his visits to Kyrgyzstan and Egypt and the expected BRICS visit, Xi will visit Washington on a trip scheduled to take place at the end of September where he will meet with President Trump in an effort to maintain a fragile trade truce between the two nations.
The entire trip is described by Bloomberg as Xi's busiest in over seven years "partly as a way to persuade others that Beijing provides firmer international guidance than Washington.
Why It Matters
A Xi visit to the BRICS summit – his first since the Galwan clashes – would have far-reaching diplomatic implications for India, and would be a test of whether India's current diplomatic détente with Beijing is able to show any sign of a working bilateral thaw as India continues to pursue its own strategic partnership with Washington.
Outlook
As Beijing has yet to officially confirm a visit to India, and a high-stakes meeting with Trump looms on the horizon, Xi's September schedule will be closely watched, capital by capital, as a gauge for where China's global alignments will go in 2027.
