Amit Shah on UCC Implementation in all 21 NDA-ruled States by 2029

Synopsis

On Sunday, September 13, 2026, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented by 2029 in the 21 states where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and National Democratic Alliance (NDA) are in power. Moreover, he said that the government was committed to deporting every illegal immigrant from the country while talking about how everyone must speak in a democracy because the BJP does not want to run the country in an emergency-like situation.

Amit Shah Visits Maharashtra

Amit Shah is on a two-day visit to Maharashtra and was speaking on the occasion of the “Seva Sankalp Abhiyaan”, a month-long national drive from September 17, 2026 to October 17, 2026 to celebrate Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday as well as his completion of 25 years of service as Chief Minister and Prime Minister.

Amit Shah reiterated the government’s commitment to deport all illegal immigrants from the country however refused to provide any specific timeline for the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur. Talking about the Genz protests that took place in July, Amit Shah stated that everyone must express opinions in a democracy as the government wants to communicate with everyone while also stating how the congress culture was different and their culture is different as they do not want to run the country in an Emergency-like situation.

Maharashtra Scam

The Congress criticized the Home Minister for avoiding questions on the allegations of corruption surrounding the Maharashtra State Co-operative Bank Limited scam, consisting of alleged financial irregularities of Rs. 25,000 crores through improper loan disbursals and distress sale of cooperative sugar factories.

As the Union Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah was asked if the ministry planned to present a white paper in the case, due to differences in the probe findings by the Central and State agencies. However, Amit Shah responded by saying that the agencies are already their work and will file a chargesheet in the court while also requesting everyone to limit themselves to the topic of the 25 years of service.

This stirred major political controversy as Maharashtra Congress President Harshwardhan Sapkal accused Amit Shah of running away from the press conference as he did not have the “courage” to answer questions on the scam.

Marathi Language Row

During Amit Shah’s visit, Maharashtra is also grappling with differences over making functional Marathi mandatory for cab and auto drivers. Amit Shah is also set to attend the Hindi Divas celebration in Mumbai on September 14, 2026.

When questioned over language issue, he stated, “It is our government’s policy to prioritize the mother tongue, and the Constitution has issued specific directives to the States in this regard. I do not believe this will become a major issue. While isolated incidents may occur if certain individuals attempt to stoke tensions, the States have experienced leadership and will certainly find a way to resolve such issues.”
