The fifth edition of SEMICON India 2026 was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Yashobhoomi Convention Centre on October 15, 2023, in New Delhi, and will run over three days, October 15, 16 and 17, 2023. Modi emphasised the start of manufacturing of commercial chips at plants in Mohali and Surat and the government statistics indicating that electronics manufacturing and mobile phone exports have increased significantly in the last 10 years.

Fifth Edition Opens at Yashobhoomi

The fifth edition of SEMICON India 2026 was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday at Yashobhoomi Convention Centre in New Delhi, kicking off a three-day national event on the semiconductor and electronics ecosystem.

The event, which takes place from September 17 to 19, emphasizes industry engagement, policy direction and international partnerships.

In his speech to the delegates, the Prime Minister drew parallels to a bigger picture of civilisational narrative. The Prime Minister took a cue from the introduction of Vishwakarma Diwas and Semicon India and praised the nation's construction and creation heritage, calling it the inspiration for a self-reliant India, a Viksit Bharat.

From Policy to Production

Modi charted the programme's journey since the beginning. He had also highlighted the development of Semicon India since 2022 from the initial discussions on the policy, project planning and pilot lines to the start of commercial production to global customers with the launch of commercial production at two new plants in Mohali and Surat.

The Numbers Behind the Push

The data revealed by the government around the summit highlight the size of change in India's electronics industry. The production of electronics goods has grown almost 6 times and exports of mobile phones are 127 times higher in 2024-25 compared to 2014-15.

The production of electronics goods has increased from around ₹1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 to around ₹12 lakh crore in 2024-25, which is six times the previous value, and the electronics exports have increased eight times, from ₹38,000 crore in 2014-15 to around ₹3.3 lakh crore in 2024-25.

Production of mobile phones increased by 28 times to a high of ₹5.45 lakh crore, while the percentage of mobile phones in the country's demand has gone down from 75% to 0.02%.

The new capacity will be brought online in a few years

Investments are also being made in some other states apart from Mohali and Surat launches and the announcement is fresh. Continental Device India has increased its semiconductor plant by investing ₹117 crore to produce high-power discrete devices such as MOSFETs and IGBTs, having an annual capacity of about 158.38 million units, in Punjab.

Advanced System in Package Technologies is setting up a plant in Andhra Pradesh with a total investment of ₹480 crore with South Korean firm APACT Co. Ltd.

Outlook

The Semicon India Programme - launched in January 2022 to create a full manufacturing ecosystem from design to fabrication and packaging is now moving into a stage where policy outcomes are becoming tangible on factory floors.

The summit, which will be attended by CEO roundtables and visits from international delegations, will be closely monitored for additional investment pledges and India's stance on the global chip supply chain.
