Synopsis

The Baku City Circuit delivered non-stop chaos as Mercedes' George Russell converted pole position into a historic Grand Slam victory, narrowly holding off a furious late-race charge from Max Verstappen by just a tenth of a second. Despite two safety car restarts, one triggered by Alex Albon's crash and another by a dramatic multi-car collision, Russell led every single lap to secure his first career Grand Slam.

Lights Out in Azerbaijan: The Battle of Baku Begins

Featuring twenty chaotic corners and a blistering 6.003-kilometre layout, the anti-clockwise Baku City Circuit track forces teams into an agonising aerodynamic compromise. Built entirely on public roads, the Baku City Circuit stands as one of the longest, fastest and most unforgiving street challenges on the Formula 1 calendar.

The 51-lap race commenced with Russell leading the way for a formation lap and slowly backing up the pack, not wanting to sit too long and risk losing tyre temperature, knowing Turn 1 offered an immediate overtaking opportunity.

Racing begins as the lights go out, with Russell executing a smooth getaway; behind him, Piastri takes the inside line, getting past Leclerc at P2. Norris too gets Hadjar and moves to P4. Antonelli, who started at P16, dropped one place down. Verstappen moves to P6 behind his teammate, getting past the two Alpine drivers and Hamilton.

The Bulls Unleashed: Red Bull Threatens Piastri’s Chase

Showcasing superior early pace, the two Red Bull drivers overtook Norris on Lap 3. Up front, Russell built a 2.2-second lead over Piastri. On Lap 5, Hadjar and Verstappen pick off Leclerc down the straight, again showing Red Bull does have race pace here.

Recognising the threat, McLaren warned Piastri that the Red Bulls were closing in, with Hadjar trailing him by just 1.3 seconds. All eyes are on Red Bull as Verstappen goes past Hadjar down the straight, who was told, “Race time is priority”, which is code for don’t fight with Verstappen, which he does not.

On lap 8, Russell is flying up front and 3.8 seconds ahead of Piastri on Medium tyres, so he should be able to go longer than Piastri, who is on softs. Verstappen was Russell’s closest challenger throughout practice until he was not in Q3, when his power unit suddenly let him down. But with a new power unit on board, he is just four tenths behind Piastri now.

Baku Bites Back: Retirements and Tyre Trouble

On lap 10, problem for Stroll at Turn 15, as he was told to stop the car, which triggered a brief yellow flag. By lap 11, Piastri managed to build a gap through the tight and twisty castle section to just keep ahead of Verstappen on the straights, and soon enough Verstappen’s tyres began to overheat in the dirty air.

Verstappen started to complain about his tyres, and Piastri kept him at bay, which was not helping him; if he wanted to challenge Russell, he had to get past Piastri first. By Lap 20, it was clear that Verstappen's tyres were not in good condition, so the better option would be to switch with Hadjar, as he seemed to have more pace. But soon enough, Hadjar tells the team to inform Verstappen to keep pushing ahead of him.

On Lap 22, Alonso retired with a water pressure issue. Russell was out on the front with 9.4 seconds lead, and Verstappen who has been behind Piastri for almost 14 laps now. Antonelli is slowly making his way to the front row, as he is in P9. On Lap 27, the wind starts to pick up as Hamilton radios that he is struggling with the rears and turning the car.

Carnage in Baku: Lock-ups and Neutralisations

On Lap 30. Norris has a lock-up and drops back to P9, which gives Antonelli and Gasly an advantage to go past him. Safety Car is deployed on the very next lap as Albon hits the wall, which works out well for Antonelli, who was miles away, and closes up to the pack. But this will also put pressure on Russell, as he will not have the 11-second lead advantage anymore.

Racing in back on at lap 36, Verstappen picks off Piastri, easily getting behind Russell, but again the race was neutralised with a yellow flag as both Alpine drivers and Norris had a collision, along with Lindblad, who also locked up and ran into his teammate Liam Lawson. Colapinto and Lawson became one of the many drivers to fall victim to a lock-up.

The second safety car of the race ended at lap 38, and on lap 40, Piastri, who was doing so well in more than half of the race, locked up behind Verstappen and dropped back down to P15, completely out of the points. A bad race for both Alpine and McLaren.

The Final Countdown: A Half-Second Battle for Baku Glory

Up front, Russell, having the fastest lap times, managed to lose Verstappen a bit, who was on his tail. With just 5 laps remaining now, Russell has the advantage on the straights, so overtaking him at the corners should be Verstappen's main goal.

Antonelli, who managed to get into the top 10 in fifth position after starting the race at P16, suffered some floor damage during the Alpine crash-out and is now unable to set the pace to close up on Leclerc.

Russell, on the other hand, does not have many laps left to survive here as the gap remains around just half a second with Verstappen. Hadjar on P3 drops back, nursing his car home for the podium, but he will need to watch his mirrors as Leclerc is only 1.7 seconds behind him.

Baku's Final Twist: Yellow Flags and a Tenth-of-a-Second Triumph

Verstappen is running out of chances here, as he just cannot get close enough to Russell on the straights, who has broken the overtake mode for Verstappen. Russell is headed for the win to try and reduce his deficit in the standings.

But just as everyone thought it would be a simple end to the race, more drama showed up with the yellow flags being waved up high as a signal for Bottas crashing into the barriers on the last lap. But that did not stop Russell from taking his first victory on this track and his first Grand Slam, as he won by just a tenth of a second from Verstappen, while also securing his eighth career win.
