Tension on the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix, a weekend where the tight confines of Principality became a survival test of software governance and mechanical endurance, the stewards oversaw a chaotic web of time penalties that rendered track position almost meaningless. Verstappen’s Opening Lap Failure: A Catastrophic Power Unit Meltdown

The race began with a formation lap, Kimi Antonelli in P1, Max Verstappen in P2 and Lewis Hamilton in P3. At lights out in Monaco, Kimi Antonelli maintained first place and a devastating start for Max Verstappen due to loss in his power unit causing him to slide down the order and retired at the end of Lap 1, the driver did mention during formation lap that the engine felt "a bit off".

With Verstappen out of the race it was now Antonelli in P1 with 5 seconds lead over Hamilton in P2 and Charles Leclerc in P3, just as it was going great for Antonelli he stumbled upon the traffic from other drivers as he was already lapping cars at Lap 13 and was struggling to keep the gap between him and Hamilton but soon Hamilton experienced degradation in his tyres meaning he will have hard time keeping up with Antonelli and would have to pit soon.

The Hadjar Radio Battle: Managing Gearbox Issues and Torque Inconsistency

At Lap 18, Cadillac Driver Valtteri Bottas pits and retires due to braking issue and overheating tyres. On Lap 20 Red Bull driver Isack Hadjar at P4 with George Russell behind him, complains over team radio about his gear shifts and also the late engine braking because his front tyres were not looking good.

Again at Lap 21 Hadjar cries over the radio "The power is down!" with Russel just half a second back. As if it wasn't enough, Hadjar informed that something is going to explode and the engine is not healthy.

Lap after Lap with more problems waiting for Hadjar, his team informed him no improvement was possible, that there was simply "no fix".

While Hadjar - Russell fight for P4 was going on, Lando Norris had the same condition as Russell for P7 with Pierre Gasly at Lap 25 and all this tension was letting Oscar Piastri have a bit of free race behind Hadjar and Russell. Back up front at Lap 27, Antonelli flying in Monaco by extending his lead over Hamilton to 10 seconds.

The Five-Second Trap: Pit Lane Errors and Steward Governance

Lap 29 and a pit stop for Hamilton changing from medium to hard tyres in 2.1 seconds stop, comes back out in P3 behind his teammate Leclerc at P2, while also gaining a 5-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane. Lap 31, Haas driver Oliver Bearman retired because of terminal brake issues combined with collision at Lap 1 with his teammate causing front wing damage.

In P5, Russell who was fighting for P4 with Hadjar pits at Lap 32 and lands in P8 behind Norris, hoping for an undercut with Hadjar. At Lap 34 Hadjar pits, drops to P7 and Norris complains about no power, just as Hadjar comes out the pit lane Russel manages to sweep past him.

Charles Leclerc pits at Lap 36, comes back out behind him team mate at P3. Russell was too investigated and given a 5-second penalty for speeding meanwhile his teammate at P1 ahead of Hamilton by 15 seconds cruising down the track.

Monaco comes with its infamous penalties, too gave Franco Colapinto a 5-second penalty at Lap 43, at the same time Norris is briefly told to hold up Russell to aid Piastri's chances, Russell keeps getting backed up but soon reads into the strategy by Mclaren.

Lap 46, Norris is struggling again with his power unit and is called into the pit to retire just as Russel and Hadjar pass him. Lap 47, Alex Albon at P9 is asked to swap positions with his teammate Carlos Sainz and to hold the pack behind him, but soon questioned his team's tactics as he locks up in Nouvelle Chicane and is passed by Lindblad who is in P10 behind Sainz. By Lap 56 drivers who gained 5-second penalties were Hamilton, Russell, Gasly, Piastri, Colapinto.

Barriers and Blunders: The High Cost of Monaco’s Narrow Margins

Lap 60 and yellow flag come out with a safety car as Lance Stroll locked up on the marbles, ran straight into the barriers at Antony Noghes and broke his front wishbone.

With the Yellow flag out, driver will pit and serve their penalties like Hamilton and Piastri. Russell too tries to serve his penalty but couldn't due to miscommunication with his team and gained another 5-second penalty for not serving his prior penalty properly.

Just as race continues at Lap 66 with Antonelli - P1, Hamilton - P2, Leclerc - P3, Hadjar - P4, Russell - P5. Red flag come out as Charles Leclerc crashes in the same spot as Stroll and is out of the race. Marshals come out to fix the track and clear the debris, while stewards are busy investigating penalties during the red flag. It is now Antonelli, Hamilton, Hadjar, Russel, Gasly at top 5.

The Invisible Standings: Why the Checkered Flag Wasn't the Final Word

Race again begins at Lap 71 with drivers in their positions on the track. Antonelli successfully gets away from Hamilton, Russel jumps to P3 and Hadjar drops to P5 behind Gasly.

Russell soon pits to serve his penalty and drop to P14 and Nico Hulkenberg is handed a 10-second penalty for causing collision with Carlos Sainz at Lowes Hairpin, leading Sainz to retire.

With just now 2 laps remaining - Antonelli (P1), Hamilton (P2), Gasly (P3), Hadjar (P4), Piastri (P5), but Gasly had two 5-second penalty yet to serve so even if he ended up on P3, it would go to Hadjar, who had mechanical issues throughout the race.

The 2026 Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix ended on Sunday, June 7,2026 with Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli taking his victory.
