Trump Likely to Visit India Early Next Year, Says Rubio

Synopsis

Washington and New Delhi are pushing for a bilateral trade deal, and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has indicated that President Donald Trump will soon be heading to India, early in the new year. Wisely made weeks after Rubio's own four-day trip to India, the top U.S. diplomat in years with an agenda to calm a partnership that has been under strain due to tariffs and geopolitical tensions, the statement came in his interview with IANS on June 27.

A presidential visit is in the planning phase

The State Department is making efforts to secure U.S. President Donald Trump's visit to India sometime in early next year, Secretary of State Marco Rubio told India's IANS news agency on Saturday. Rubio said he hoped the president would come sometime early next year, and he expects to do the same this year to set the stage for his visit.

The news comes at a time when India-U.S. relations are going through a tricky phase. The ties between both nations have had a sour note over the last year as Washington has slapped India with high tariffs on its products and penalized New Delhi for its continued oil imports from Russia, while also closely working with India's long-time rival Pakistan

Modi-Trump Meeting and G7 Signal

Trump, who said the meeting was "very good" on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France last week with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has not yet asked the Indian counterpart for details of the talks, including any specific agreement made with the French President. Diplomatic observers viewed the meeting as a thaw, after several months of tension regarding trade and strategic cooperation.

For months, India has been seeking a meeting with the United States, possibly as part of a wider one that includes Japan and Australia, who are the other two members of the Quad, the informal Indo-Pacific security bloc.

A key force of the trade deal remains core

A possible visit by Trump is linked to the prospect for a bilateral trade deal. In his May trip to New Delhi, Rubio characterised India as one of Washington's most vital strategic partners and shared his optimism that a trade deal between the two countries would be completed soon.

The talks over a comprehensive trade deal haven't progressed, though the two sides had already reached an interim agreement, which removed some tariffs and increased Indian demand for U.S. goods, such as energy products.

It wasn't long before the questions were fired at him on Rubio's trip to India, optics and undercurrents

Rubio's four day stay in India in late May included visits to Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur and New Delhi. Rubio is set to meet with key Indian officials on energy security, trade and defence cooperation, the U.S. State Department said in advance of the trip. He was also a part of the Quad foreign ministers meeting in New Delhi on 26 May.

However, there were diplomatic nuances to this visit. Rubio was greeted in New Delhi by a mid-level official, rather than External Affairs Minister or another senior official, perhaps a sign of New Delhi's pragmatic attitude toward the U.S. government's new administration.

Strategic Stakes

Nevertheless, India and the U.S. are working to promote defence and technology cooperation, with India emerging as an important counterweight to China in the Indo-Pacific region for the U.S. If confirmed, a Trump visit would have strong symbolic and strategic significance — as well as a sort of reset for the current American administration, which has been more transactional than transformational in its relationship with the Palestinians.
