An Iranian Attack Threat

Trump remarked that he slipped away from Air Force One after attending a recent NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey. The change of plans came after the U.S. Secret Service and the army directed the president to switch his plane when they sensed that he might be facing an Iranian assassination threat. “I go by Secret Service and the military. They wanted me to go in a different flight, a different plane,” Trump said of sneaking off the presidential plane.

The Decoy Plane

The flight swap was first reported by the Washington Post, and later Trump’s own comments about the incident confirmed it. Trump was reportedly put away in an airport catering container to slip into another plane. At the same time, Air Force One, which was filled with White House officials, security and support staff, and reporters, was sent out in the sky over Turkey as a decoy, just in case Iran decided to run an attack on it.

The president’s flight out of Turkey repeatedly made headlines because he had arrived in a luxury jet gifted by Qatar, but it lacked the same missile-detection and countermeasures systems found on older presidential jets.

The Path Trump Took

He ended up traveling in a smaller government aircraft from Turkey to the United Kingdom. There, he sneaked back onto the decoy jet, descended from the aircraft, and boarded the Qatari plane.

The White House communications director, Steven Cheung, said, “As the President has said recently, there are many enemies of America who have their sights on him, and we use every tool at our disposal to address those threats.”

This move also prompted questions about the new Qatari- donated jet’s security. The trip to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) was the plane's first international flight, whose speedy upgrades led to questions over its cost and security, and it took place as hostilities with Iran, which borders Turkey, escalated.
