He further encouraged the participants to do more than just observe annually. Modi urged people to make yoga a daily practice, and not restrict it to a day or event, and said that at age 40, you should be more flexible than at age 20, and healthier at older ages.

The event was also marked by several significant moments, including the external affairs minister S. Jaishankar performing yoga at Nehru Park, New Delhi, alongside Norway's Ambassador to India, May-Elin Stener, who also participated in the ceremony.

The event also included several other significant moments, such as the external affairs minister S. Jaishankar performing yoga at Nehru Park, New Delhi, along with other participants.

A Global Footprint: 2,500 Venues, Six Continents

International Yoga Day was celebrated beyond the Indian border, with the Indian diplomatic missions conducting programmes in almost 2500 places around the globe. The events were organized in community centres, public parks, cultural institutions and iconic sites worldwide.

HR Nagendra, the PM Modi's personal Yoga trainer headed the events in Times Square, NY, New York, which has been one of the most photographed places outside India for the Yoga Day every year.

On June 18, 2026, the United Nations' North Lawn became a floating yoga studio when over 800 yoga enthusiasts congregated by the East River of the UN. The programme started with an auspicious chanting of "Om", followed by the guidance of the asana and breathing exercises by the instructors.

In his Message, UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted the embracing nature of yoga in his words, "The ancient practice of yoga has become truly universal, resonating with the demographic realities and helping millions of people find peace, strengthen their bodies and live with purpose, irrespective of their faith or culture.

Standout Events Across India

Women had a special aqua yoga session at the swimming pool of Sama Sports Complex in the city of Vadodara, Gujarat, where the combination of traditional yoga postures with water based exercises in a unique and innovative format, promotes flexibility and balance in the city.

The theme of this year is being followed by the renowned sand artist Manas Kumar Sahoo who created a sand animation of Prime Minister Modi doing yoga in Puri, Odisha which took him around 30 minutes.

The celebration was accompanied by a substantive policy step, announced by Haryana. The State will incorporate Yoga into school education from class 6 onwards for the academic year 2026-27 and gradually increase the scope of involvement to classes 3 to 9 in the coming years. A separate training of teachers will be organised and a yoga institute will be set up in Morni.

The theme and its Public Health foundations

This year's theme was nothing like a ceremonial one. With the theme directly linking to the WHO Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021-2030), which encourages action to ensure that older people remain active, independent and engaged.

It is believed that 300 million people in over 190 countries practise yoga. It was included in UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016.

In preparation for the observance on 21 June, the Ministry of AYUSH organized a countdown program called '100 Days, 100 Cities, 100 Organisations' that commenced with a Yoga Mahotsav at Vigyan Bhawan in March, and a new program titled Yoga 365, which aimed to make people practice yoga on a daily basis.

The yoga mat hasn't moved for 12 years since it took two Guinness World Records on the UN calendar for yoga on a single morning on the Rajpath. The ambition has changed: from one special day a year to a practice that gets engrained in the way ageing populations around the world manage their bodies and minds – year after year, decade after decade.
