How Scotland pulled a miracle in Glasgow 2026

Officially the host for the Commonwealth Games 2026 was the Australian state of Victoria but the state abruptly withdrew as host and Scotland came in for rescue and delivered a compact, sustainable edition that garnered wide praise and applause from both fans and critics.

In the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, Glasgow hosted a total 3000 athletes from 74 nations competing across 215 medal events in 10 sports. India also aims to build a likewise system here in ‘Amdavad’ for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

A Centenary celebration

The 2030 edition will officially be known as the XXIV Commonwealth Games. What makes this edition special is the timing, as it will mark 100 years of Commonwealth Games that began in 1930.

As per the latest info date have not been finalised, but organisers have indicated a preference for October, which is also symbolic as the previous Delhi 2010 Commonwealth was held October.

The Venue: Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave

The venue is already confirmed for the next CWG 2030. The games will commence in THE SARDAR VALLABHBHAI PATEL SPORTS ENCLAVE in Motera, instead of spreading the events across several cities, the games will be organized around SVP sports enclave in Motera.

The hub is roughly around 350-acre riverside campus upon the banks of Sabarmati. The infamous 132000-seats Narendra Modi stadium, the largest cricket stadium in the world will host the opening and closing ceremonies. Officials expect the city to host between 15 and 17 sports.

What India is learning from Glasgow

As the baton was handed over to India on 03.08.2026, Harish Sanghavi, Gujarat deputy chief minister attended the Glasgow closing ceremony alongside sports Department Secretary Hari Ranjan Rao, they praised the compact and well-connected nature of Ahmedabad as central to the city’s pitch. Sanghavi talked about clustered venues, integrated transport, and modern accommodation designed to cut down on travel time for athletes and spectators and how it will be provided by the state in the next Centenary edition of Commonwealth 2030.

The bigger picture: India’s 2036 Olympic dream

The CWG 2030 is a practice ground for the sports administrators for a larger ambition which is to host the 2036 Olympic games. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said that after the CWG 2030, Ahmedabad will be ready to host the 2036 Olympics. The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel sports enclave has already been set up as a sports hub for the Olympic bid.

The cost of ambition

The preparation for CWG 2030 has already commenced. A total of 650 acres of areas has been earmarked for sports infrastructure.

In this acquired land a new competition complex, an athlete’s village and reception facilities along the Sabarmati Riverfront will be built. The land acquisition has already displaced hundreds of families in Motera, a sad reality that global visibility is more important than human emotions.

India’s Glasgow 2026 report card

India failed to top the table in CWG 2030 and finished fourth in global standing with 39 medals. The host nation Scotland partnered India with the same number of medals and gold medals but finished fifth on a lower silver tally.

India athletes showed a remarkable performance in the CWG 2026 after bagging 13 gold, 17 silver and 9 bronze medals. Australia topped the table after bagging a total 171 medals, ahead of England 110 and Canada 62.
