CJI Surya Kant Extends Independence Day Wishes
Chief Justice of India calls for continued national progress rooted in democracy, equality, the rule of law and constitutional principles on the 80th Independence Day

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant conveyed his best wishes for the progress of India and the ideals of democracy, rule of law, equality and constitutionalism while wishing Independence Day greetings to reporters in Delhi.
He wished the country a happy Independence Day and said that the nation should move forward to make it stronger and brighter with the help of its constitutional principles of strength, democracy, rule of law, equality and all these.

Delivering the keynote address at the national flag-hoisting ceremony at the Supreme Court Bar Association in the Supreme Court premises, CJI Kant said that the journey of the country has not yet ended and the youth of the legal profession should be ready to take on new responsibilities.
Armed violence and the struggle for independence
In the same meeting, the Chief Justice elaborately discussed the relationship between Law and Indian Independence Movement. As he addressed the function of Independence Day organised by the SCBA at the Supreme Court lawns, he said, "Today's gathering is special because our freedom movement had a close link with law since Mahatma Gandhi and Dr B.R. Ambedkar were both lawyers, who are among the greatest architects of modern India.
He said that the fight for independence that followed was not only an armed revolt but a protracted effort to challenge the legitimacy of colonialism by means of political actions, petitions, public debate, and by the use of the law.
Taking the theme forward with the current day, CJI said that the urge of the legal profession to scrutinize the exercise of power with adherence to the principles of justice, fairness and the rule of law was not just a legacy of the freedom movement, but was relevant even today.
