Masterclass at the Hungaroring as Strategic Gambles and Reliability Woes Reshape the Grid

The Hungaroring turned into a fifty-degree furnace for the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix. Lando Norris survived the relentless heat and a flurry of technical failures to secure a defining win for McLaren. While championship rivals fell to gearbox issues and pit-lane penalties, the ‘Papaya’ team proved that composure is the only way to survive the Budapest sun. It was a masterclass in endurance where the car, the code, and the driver finally clicked.

F1 welcomes Hungaroring again this year. Zak Brown, the CEO of McLaren Racing, said a couple races ago that McLaren would be winning before the end of the season – so would they get a jump on his prediction this race and bag a win?
The race started with formation lap as usual with Norris in P1, Leclerc in P2, and Piastri in P3 and just as the lights went off Norris gets a great start while Leclerc had sluggish getaway. Hamilton, Leclerc and Verstappen go side by side into Turn 1 and Verstappen manages to sneak through in P3.
AdvertisementLeclerc seemed to be going backwards and Piastri is through Norris. Lap 2 – Russell didn’t go away well as the car went into anti-stall and he got bogged down to 19th, nearly the entire field driving by him even Cadillac – ouch!
Lap 3 – Piastri leading the race in Hungary with Norris sticking within one second behind him. Stroll has radioed to complain about a lack of power. Lap 7 – Piastri is now 1.2 seconds ahead, and Verstappen dropped back 1.9 seconds behind Norris, so he no longer needs to think about defence.
Perez will be investigated for starting procedure infringement after the race. Piastri qualified P5, started third and is now heading the race.
On Lap 12, Verstappen and Hamilton fighting for P3, which allows the two McLarens to escape up the road. Further back Russell is back up to P11 and 3.3 seconds behind Hulkenberg in the fight for the final point.
AdvertisementOn Lap 14, Hamilton pits, which implies a 2-stop and comes out in 9th behind Lindblad. Verstappen too pits a lap after and comes out behind Hamilton in P8. On Lap 16, Bottas in pit – his brakes are on fire, can’t make it all the way back to the garage but is in the pit lane. It also triggers yellow flag in the pit lane, so no one can respond just yet in terms of stops.
Piastri pits on lap 17 and comes out behind Hadjar in P4, making Antonelli the race leader. On Lap 19, Piastri, Norris and Verstappen pass through Hadjar, who was in P2. Hadjar keeps out of the way for Verstappen but not for Hamilton and he timed that perfectly for his team mate. But eventually Hamilton does get past him with fresh tyres.
Antonelli front out still yet to pit likely to go for one stop with a lead of 13 seconds, soon Piastri is informed about and told to get on with it, to keep up the pace so that 1-stop doesn’t work for Antonelli.
Lap 22 – Antonelli pits and comes out behind Leclerc at P6, in clean air. A 1 or 2-stop for him? But if a 2-stop, he will have tyre offset later on. 24 Laps into the race and top 5 are Piastri, Norris, Verstappen, Hamilton and Leclerc. Norris has had the edge on his team mate all weekend and he is coming for Piastri, with just 0.666s between the two papaya team mates.
Ferrari had so much pace on softs, but on the hards they just do not seem particularly strong as Hamilton isn’t putting any pressure on Verstappen. On Lap 26, with Norris closing in Piastri informs his tyres doesn’t feel great, so maybe he will have to let Norris pass.
On Lap 30, Piastri gets a bit of breathing room as Norris got a nasty gust of wind and ran wide. Leclerc is all over the back of Hamilton and have overtake mode on. On Lap 31, Hamilton pits from P4 and comes out in P7 behind Hadjar.
Norris is closed back up to Piastri, who is struggling for pace and just then Piastri was given a hurry up as Hamilton pits but he does not have the pace left in his tyres. And Hamilton is flying on the new tyres as he boosts past Hadjar. On Lap 35, Piastri pits and comes back out in P5, 3 seconds ahead of Hamilton, with now Norris the race leader.
On Lap 37, Leclerc pits from P3 and comes back out in P7 ahead of Russell. Drama on the track as contact for Piastri with Sainz and almost went off track, but the contact was minimal in terms of damage and as a result Piastri lost a lot of time. On Lap 40, Norris pits and comes back out ahead of Piastri in P3.
The top 3 of the race now, Verstappen, Antonelli, Norris and stewards has taken Sainz under investigation for contact with Piastri. Now paying attention to the back markers, Bearman has just spun off and up front Verstappen leads from Antonelli, Norris has a tyre offset and seemingly fast, is ahead of Piastri.
On Lap 43, Antonelli leads the race and Verstappen down in P5 as he pitted earlier. Can Antonelli keep the McLarens at bay? – Piastri is losing more time and not a good weekend for him as Hamilton impeding his cost him in Qualifying and now some contact when lapping Sainz might have cost him the win.
5-second penalty for Sainz is given out. On Lap 45 – Norris is all over Antonelli whose tyres is 22 laps old so the fight should not last long and just then Norris gets it done and is back in the lead. Lap 48, no stop for Antonelli, is Mercedes hoping for some overheating brakes of a rival and a safety car here?
Norris is 4.1 seconds ahead of Mercedes and Antonelli who is losing time is warned about track limits again – a recurring theme this year. On Lap 50, Leclerc unhappy as “something wrong with the car” he is told, it is overheating with the track remaining around 50 degrees.
On Lap 51, Bottas is already retired for Cadillac now Perez moving slowly, he has brake overheating and internal mechanical issues. Up ahead Norris is 7.2 seconds clear of Antonelli.

On Lap 54, Antonelli pits from P2 as he is told the tyres will not make it to the end and comes out in P6 ahead of Russell. After two laps, Antonelli is told he can get back into P2 especially with his tyre offset. But Piastri has an issue; he stopped at Turn 3 and the VSC is called out. Mercedes pitted a couple of laps too soon to take advantage.
Piastri's race is done with a gearbox issue. Norris, Hamilton and Leclerc pit during the VSC. Lap 57, VSC ending, Norris leads from Verstappen and Hamilton. Antonelli being ahead at the SC line so Hamilton had to give that position back.
Only reliability can do for Norris here as he has 6 seconds lead and fresh tyres. Verstappen is being helped on his old tyres as Antonelli and Hamilton are fighting behind, as they are not closing that gap.

Lap 61, the lap ticks down and Verstappen will be hoping for some luck. If Antonelli and Hamilton keep on fighting, the Dutchman could be on a very good P2. But Hamilton has been noted for speeding in the pit lane.
On Lap 63, Norris increases his lead to 10.3 seconds and is told to slow down and watch for track limits. Further back, Antonelli picks up traffic and catches the back markers in a really bad place, losing time as a result, and Hamilton closes back to him with 1.5 seconds gap.
Hamilton under the hot water, is given a 5-second penalty and Leclerc is 5 seconds behind him. Back up Norris is told that aggressive use of kerbs has contributed to Piastri’s gearbox issue and is warned to keep them off as he heads towards the win.
At lap 68, there is a seesawing battle at Ferrari as Leclerc is 4.6 seconds behind Hamilton, so as it stands, Hamilton would drop one position if Leclerc continues to stay within 5 seconds. 2 laps remaining and Hamilton is finally informed about the penalty, who responds with “they are handing out penalties like crazy”.
Onto the final lap, Norris leads the race by a mighty 14 seconds as he heads towards the win, his first win of the season. Verstappen is comfortable and on soft tyres, holding on well here despite being over 30 laps old. Antonelli is going to grab a podium from 7th on the grid. The updates played out well for Norris as he wins the Hungarian GP.
