Synopsis

On Sunday, 1 November 2026 the INDIA bloc packed Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan, demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls. Rahul Gandhi led a coalition of heavyweights, while the BJP held rival marches and called the rally a “conspiracy”. The Election Commission denies the allegations. Crowd numbers, traders’ losses and even the date became fresh battlegrounds. The one thing nobody disputes is that Delhi traffic suffered.

Ramlila Maidan Rally Draws Tens of Thousands as INDIA Bloc Flexes

The opposition promised 10 lakh people but the ground held a fraction of that, yet it was still a show. The march set off at noon from the Minto Road-Connaught Place junction, with leaders travelling in open buses and a jeep. It was reported that tens of thousands of people turned up, chanting “Save the vote, save the country”. Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav, Mehbooba Mufti and Supriya Sule were all on the guest list.

The bloc expected up to 10 lakh people. The ground itself holds 45,000 to 50,000 when empty, and fewer once chairs and enclosures go in. Delhi Police had forecast about 50,000 attendees. Maths was clearly not on the invitation list.

Rahul Gandhi’s “Vote Chori” Pitch: Modi, Shah and Kumar in the Crosshairs

The Lok Sabha LoP says the crowd is a message, and that the message apparently has three receivers addressees. Gandhi told the crowd that it had to send a message to Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and Gyanesh Kumar. He said the voice sending the message was that of “youth, women, farmers and workers”, not of a party. Reports say he alleged vote theft in several states and in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, through EVMs and by adding and deleting names on voter lists. Some prominent news stations headlines also quoted him calling the 2024 election “illegal”. The BJP has rejected all of this.

Kharge has vowed to fight until Kumar quits. Mamata Banerjee mocked the CEC, and Tejashwi Yadav turned the maidan into the Mahabharata, with Shakuni playing dice.

What Is the SIR Row? The Voter List Revision Explained

More than 130 million names are gone from draft rolls, and everyone disagrees about why and the how. At the centre of it all is the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). According to some reports, it has removed more than 130 million names from India’s draft electoral rolls. The Election Commission says it is weeding out duplicates and the dead, the relocated and the ineligible, and that wrongly excluded voters can apply to be restored. The BJP and the EC has also denied any bias.

The opposition says genuine voters are vanishing, to the BJP’s benefit. Akhilesh Yadav cited a claim of 1.27 crore deleted voters in Uttar Pradesh. It was also noted in an investigative report that Kumar made key decisions over the objections of the two other commissioners. Countering this claim, the poll panel said differences of opinion are normal.

Same day, rival rallies, and a fight over the calendar

The BJP also staged a march in West Delhi’s Hari Nagar, led by Hardeep Singh Puri, to remember the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. It accused Congress of holding its rally on the anniversary. Amit Shah said the rally would “rub salt in the wounds” of riot victims. BJP president Nitin Nabin led a “Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao” march in Rohtak.

JP Nadda called the Delhi rally a “calculated conspiracy” and political drama. Sambit Patra argued that if the 2024 election was illegal, then Rahul Gandhi’s and Kharge’s Lok Sabha seats were too.

Traders, Turnout and the Numbers Game

The Chamber of Trade and Industry warned of up to ₹10,000-12,000 crore in daily trade at risk. Gandhi urged protesters to shop too. Then he alleged that the BJP had forcibly shut Connaught Place shops. Patra said 5,000-7,000 of 28,000 chairs sat empty in the afternoon. These are claims, not independently verified counts.

Police reportedly required the event to end by 5pm, with CCTV installed. About 10,000 personnel were deployed citywide. BBC described the mood as largely peaceful. On Saturday the opposition held a symbolic impeachment of Kumar, which has no legal standing, since a CEC can only be removed through Parliament.
