Tribal Protest Dismantled in Madhya Pradesh

The Madhya Pradesh Police on Sunday July 19, 2026 at around 5 AM, roughly 2,000 to 3,000 police personnel arrived at the site to clear the demonstrators. Forcibly shifted several tribal protesting against the Union Government’s ₹44,000 crore Ken-Betwa Link Project (KBLP), India’s first river linking project, and two irrigation projects of the Madhya Pradesh Government. Protest leader Amit Bhatnagar was shifted to Bijawar Civil Hospital after a 14-day hunger strike. Protesters alleged he was detained, while authorities said he was moved for medical reasons. MP Police also dispersed the protest site on the banks of Barana River near Kupi village, and removed the symbolic pyres put up by the demonstrators, with officers saying the decision to bring them out of water was taken due to rising water levels after heavy rains in the area.

Police Cite Safety

The area had received heavy rains for the past two days causing the river to overflow and the action was taken to prevent any untoward incident as the demonstrators included women, children and elderly people. Several protestors, however, refused to move, accusing the police of forcing them out and assaulting women. Videos also showed police personnel dragging women away from the shore as well as some policemen forcing Mr. Bhatnagar into an ambulance. Mr. Bhatnagar has been admitted to the Bijawar Civil Hospital and his vital signs are stable, the protestors were dropped to their villages in Panna district in buses.

What is The Ken-Betwa River Project?

The Ken-Betwa link project aims to divert surplus water of Ken River basin to water scarce areas of Betwa River basin in the Bundelkhand region. Both the ken and Betwa Rivers are tributaries of the Yamuna River. The project will be implemented in two phases.

Phase-I a 77 m high dam, Daudhan is proposed across river Ken, about 2.5Km upstream of existing Gangau Weir. Dead and full reservoir levels are 240m & 288m respectively. Establishment of Two power houses, one at the toe of the dam and other at the outlet of lower level tunnel are also proposed to generate power. The total length of the link canal will be 221Km including 2Km tunnel. Water is released to Betwa river through link canal in the upstream of Parichha Weir which will be used in Lalitpur district of UP for drinking and irrigation purpose. Phase-II, Lower orrdam,Kotha Barrage and Bina Complex Projects were included to meet the water requirement of water short areas of Betwa basin within allocated water to MP at Rajghat Dam. The project is expected to provide annual irrigation of 10.62 lakh ha. (M.P. 8.11 lakh ha, UP 2.5 lakh ha), drinking water supply to about 62 lakh (MP 41 lakh, UP 21 lakh).

Why Tribal Are Protesting?

Thousands of tribal residents and 7,100 farming families across 14 villages in Chhatarpur and 8 villages in Panna district, Bundelkhand, Madhya Pradesh have been protesting against Ken-Betwa Link Project (KBLP) and two irrigation projects. Demonstrators argue that the Daudhan Dam will submerge their ancestral villages, displace families and affect their livelihoods. Protesters also allege inadequate compensation, unfulfilled "land-for-land" rehabilitation, and the loss of their cultural identity. They have adopted Gandhian-style protest by ‘Aamran Anshan' (fast unto death) and 'Chita Andolan' (funeral pyre protest) to the 'Mitti' and 'Jal' Satyagrahas.
