Sports Ministry Suspends Table Tennis Federation Recognition

The Sports Ministry has pulled its recognition of the Table Tennis Federation of India. The move came on Wednesday, and the ministry didn't mince words, pointing to governance deficiencies and what it called institutional failures within the body. Going forward, the Indian Olympic Association has been asked to step in, setting up an ad-hoc committee in consultation with the International Table Tennis Federation, until TTFI can get its house in order. The order leaned heavily on one specific failure, the federation never got around to holding its elections on time, and its response to an earlier show cause notice apparently didn't cut it either. TTFI, for what it's worth, is currently led by Meghna Ahlawat, its first-ever woman president, who's been in charge since December 2022.

What Reasons Did The Ministry Cite?

The ministry's order doesn't hold back. It says the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) has failed to stick to the basics: good governance, transparency, accountability, democratic functioning, the things any recognised National Sports Federation is expected to manage. On top of that, it flags poor player welfare and points out that last year's National Championships were delayed. Not exactly a flattering picture.

Elections are technically due this year, but the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) hasn't said when or how they'll happen, and that silence didn't help its case. The suspension itself comes from the National Sports Development Code of India, 2011, via an office order signed by Director (Sports) Bangararaju VVKK. It's effective immediately and stays that way until the ministry says otherwise.

What Happens To TTFI Now?

With recognition gone, the Indian Olympic Association takes the wheel, working alongside the International Table Tennis Federation to build some kind of internal regulatory mechanism, an ad-hoc committee, essentially, to keep the sport running in India. That setup sticks around until TTFI manages to put together a properly elected governance structure of its own.

This isn't new territory for TTFI, either. Back in February 2022, the Delhi High Court suspended the federation after paddler Manika Batra pushed back against being left out of the Asian Championships. The court didn't just suspend things and walk away; it appointed an administrator to actually run the body.

Why Has TTFI Faced Turmoil?

The last few months haven't been kind to TTFI. Back in January, the federation suspended its own Secretary General, former player Kamlesh Mehta, over alleged financial irregularities. Mehta wasn't having it, he took the matter to the Delhi High Court, which ended up quashing the suspension. Most people read the whole episode as an internal power struggle, though TTFI denied that was the case.

Then there's the Manika Batra situation, left off the Asian Games squad for not meeting a domestic tournament requirement, which didn't do TTFI's reputation any favors either. As for who's actually running the federation right now, that's Meghna Ahlawat, married to Haryana MLA Dushyant Chautala, whose father, Ajay Singh Chautala, headed TTFI once upon a time himself.
