Tata Breach Exposes iPhone 18 Pro Secrets

Synopsis

Leaks of confidential material regarding the design of Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 Pro have appeared on the dark web, following a ransomware attack on one of America's leading manufacturing partners in India, Tata Electronics.

A Reuters investigation revealed that the leaked documents contain at least six documents detailing the components of the iPhone 18 Pro and their respective suppliers, ranging from chips to battery components and camera modules.

Multiple of these files included both Apple's "confidential" watermarks and Apple codenames for the iPhone 18 Pro models, as well as photos of the iPhones in drop tests.

Photos Reveal Prototype Design

One of the most impressive features of the breach are photographs. The photos, taken early in 2026, feature iPhones being dropped at one of Tata's manufacturing facilities, featuring a traditional slab-shaped, grey device with the Apple logo and a three-camera setup located on the rear. Reuters wasn't able to establish the exact model number, but the source told it the device was an iPhone 18 Pro model.

Anatomy of the Breach

The attack is thought to be by the ransomware group World Leaks, who previously said they had attacked Nike. Tata Electronics responded to the data breach after posting over 200,000 files that included information about Apple and Tesla, which are both customers of the group and are using Tata as a supplier.

The leaked trove also apparently contained component design papers for previous generations of the iPhone, plus documents from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC).

Tata, however, has curbed access within the company to sensitive systems and has engaged a global consultant to carry out a forensic audit, and Apple has said it is investigating the issue.

They are India's Manufacturing aspirations

The window of opportunity is important. Tata's growing involvement is a key element in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts to transform India into an electronics manufacturing nation, with Counterpoint forecasting that India will be manufacturing 26 per cent of all iPhones in the world by 2026, rising from six per cent four years ago.

The violation, industry observers say, could have a harmful or damaging impact on the trust that has formed between Apple and Tata, as supplier deals are closely guarded by Apple and could give an advantage to competing companies or counterfeiters looking to understand its production system.

The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max are expected to be available in September, coinciding with other price increases, as Apple increased the price of the iPad and MacBook last week due to "rapidly rising memory and storage chip costs.
