Modi Outlines Four Pillars of India’s BRICS Presidency

Prime Minister Narendra Modi states that rising geopolitical tensions impact ordinary people across the world. The BRICS must rise through cooperation and inclusive growth to meet these challenges and blossom for the sake of humanity.

The grouping had focused on four pillars: resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability and had worked to turn a shared vision into mutually beneficial collaboration.

PM Modi highlighted initiatives aimed at strengthening preparedness against pandemics and disasters, making supply chains more resilient and promoting innovation through startups, digital agriculture and technology. PM Modi said India had sought to expand BRICS cooperation beyond governments by involving entrepreneurs, farmers, researchers, women, youth and ordinary citizens.

“India has advanced the spirit of friendship, partnership, and cooperation through the BRICS platform. We have endeavoured to ensure that BRICS cooperation is not limited to governments alone; we want our entrepreneurs, farmers, researchers, women, youth, and ordinary citizens to become active participants as well. I am pleased that, with your cooperation and support, we have been able to transform our shared vision into a win-win collaboration."

Modi highlighted the proposed BRICS Network on Digital Agriculture, which will use artificial intelligence and digital public infrastructure to address farmers' needs.

He also backed stronger support for innovation through the BRICS Incubator Network, which will connect startups and incubators. A proposed BRICS Startup Innovation Fund is aimed at supporting innovative and scalable solutions.

Modi cautioned that the weaponisation of technology and critical minerals could hinder shared global progress and stressed the need to ensure that technological development remains inclusive.

India Hands over BRICS Presidency to China

At the conclusion of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, PM Modi officially handed over the rotating BRICS chairmanship to China, which will host the 19th BRICS Summit in 2027. China assumes the rotating presidency effective January 1, 2027.

PM Modi extended his best wishes to Chinese President Xi Jinping. Modi emphasised that as BRICS enters its third decade, the world expects "concrete results" and continuity in institutional momentum rather than slowdowns during leadership transitions.

In response, President Xi praised India's hosting and outlined Beijing's agenda for the upcoming term, emphasising multilateralism, reforming the international financial architecture, strengthening the New Development Bank (NDB), and expanding South-South cooperation across AI and the digital economy.

The conclusion of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi firmly positioned the expanded bloc as an operational vehicle for the Global South, translating rhetoric into institutional weight under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability.”
