Synopsis

The United States will hold its midterm elections on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, in a momentous political contest that will decide control of Congress for the remaining two years of President Donald Trump's term. While the elections will not determine the presidency, they could significantly affect his ability to change policies on trade, immigration, taxation, and foreign affairs.

What Are U.S. Midterm Elections 2026?

US midterm elections are held every four years between presidential elections, which is halfway through a president's tenure. Unlike presidential elections, voters elect members of Congress and, in numerous states, governors and other local representatives.

In 2026, all 435 House seats and 35 of the Senate's 100 seats are up for election. The results will show which party controls both chambers of Congress.

Why Is the U.S. Congress Important?

The U.S. Congress is the country's federal legislature, consisting of the House of Representatives and the Senate. Both chambers play integral roles in passing legislation by approving government spending and reviewing the executive branch.

The House has 435 voting members, elected for two-year terms. The Senate has 100 members, with two senators representing each state and serving six-year terms.

For a president to advance major legislative policies, support in Congress is often vital. Although executive powers let a president act in many key areas, Congress can shape funding, legislation, and government oversight.

What Happens If the U.S. Congress Changes and Why It Matters for Donald Trump?

If Democrats secure control of either chamber, Trump's government could face greater resistance to its legislative measures and policies.

A Democratic-controlled House could intercept or delay proposed legislation, impact budget negotiations, and unleash investigations into administration policies. It could also initiate impeachment proceedings, although removing a president necessitates a separate Senate trial and the mandatory votes.

If Democrats win control of the Senate, they could also impact confirmations of presidential nominees and complicate it for the administration to clear certain priorities.

However, a Republican victory in both chambers would facilitate Trump a more favourable scope for implementing his agenda. Even then, disagreements within the Republican Party could still complicate policymaking.

Why Should India Watch the U.S. Mid-term Elections?

The outcome could have consequences for India-U.S. relations, especially in trade, immigration, technology and defence cooperation.

Impacts in congressional priorities could impact debates over tariffs, H-1B visas, investment and strategic partnerships. However, a shift in party control would not naturally reverse existing U.S. policies, as the president retains massive authority over foreign relations and executive action.

The Anti-India, Anti- South Asia Hate

There are several factors that will drive the election results. One among them is how immigrants, particularly the Indian Sikh community and South Asian Americans, have been victims of increasing hate crime incidents in recent months.

The incidents have moved from online and local immigration debates into candidate campaigns. Anti-Indian rhetoric is a campaign issue in Texas.

On Friday, October 23, 2026, while addressing an election rally in Florida, Trump once again took credit for stopping India and Pakistan from escalating to a full-blown war last year by threatening them with steep tariffs.

India launched Operation Sindoor in May 2025, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoK) following the April 22, 2025 terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed several lives.

“You stop India and Pakistan, two nuclear nations... I said, 'Fellas, if you guys are going to do that, you're not going to trade with the United States...I'm going to put massive tariffs on both of you, 250 per cent, so you won't be able to do any business," Trump said.

India has repeatedly rejected Trump's assertions that he brokered a ceasefire between New Delhi and Islamabad, maintaining that the understanding to stop military action was reached directly between the two countries.
