Synopsis

In the backdrop of a parallel sustainability campaign gaining vocal traction among urban youth, India's fast fashion industry is growing at almost 17 per cent per year driven by social media trends and increased disposable income. Industry data shows there is still conscious consumerism – but it's a smaller and secondary force, with price and novelty still playing a major role in consumer purchasing decisions.

A two-front market expansion

The clothing industry in India is in both the fast and sustainable growth phase. By 2025, the Indian fast fashion market is estimated to be worth $13.5 billion, expanding at a compound annual growth rate of almost 17 per cent until 2032, with young consumers who are digital first at its core.

India's fast fashion industry is expected to reach the $50 billion mark in the FY31, up from $10 billion in 2024, driven by influencer marketing and increased income levels in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, according to a separate industry estimate.

Meanwhile, sustainable fashion is making limited strides. India's sustainable fashion market is projected to expand by 21.96 per cent CAGR from 2026 to 2033, with organic textiles being the fastest growing product segment.

The Environmental Cost

Fast fashion is a serious issue in terms of environmental impacts in India. In 2024, the fast fashion industry in India generated over 1.5 million tonnes of waste.

The situation is even worse worldwide: according to a report by UNEP in March 2025, 92m tonnes of textile waste are produced globally each year and in the USA, data from November 2024 by US EPA showed that only 14.7 per cent of all textiles are recycled.

Are Consumers Putting the Rules into Action?

As consumer values, the survey results reveal the boundless enthusiasm for sustainability. According to the 2024 McKinsey & Company survey, there were nearly 73 per cent Gen Z consumers who actively look for sustainable brands and ethically made products in urban India.

According to industry watchers, there was a 120 per cent increase in the search volume for ‘sustainable fashion' on Indian search engines year-on-year.

But market analysts warn that stated preference hasn't yet been converted into purchasing dominance. Within the sustainability-claim segment, traditional fast fashion is expected to keep the largest market share in the world at 85.7 per cent by 2035 thanks to low prices and trend availability.

The sustainability aspect of the issues is gaining traction among Indian consumers, industry observers add, but is not taking precedence for many consumers over price and novelty.

Institutional Responses

Formalisation of sustainability initiatives is beginning by government and industry bodies. The Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI) announced the SU in March 2025.

RE website and Sustainable Supply Chain Directory as a step towards standardisation of ethical sourcing within the sector.

The government's Production Linked Incentive scheme is also looking to double garment exports to $50 billion by 2030, with the construction of new Mega Integrated Textile Regions and Apparel parks planned to upgrade infrastructure.

Outlook

The fashion industry in India is not a binary choice between fast fashion and sustainability, but rather the co-existence of both. For now, it is a commercial and environmental matter of debate whether resale sites, circular fashion practices and rental programs can actually challenge the hegemony of cheap fast fashion and high turnover rates.
